La Ghiacciaia
the restaurant built in a First-World-War bunker, shines with new light

Inaugurated in late 2019, La Ghiacciaia in Pederobba (TV) is the result of a meticulous redevelopment plan whose aim was to combine the different origins of the site and enhance their historical characteristics: initially the seventeenth-century ice-house of a noble villa belonging to the Counts of Pola-Neville, the building was later used as a weapons store during the Great War. With a background so steeped in history, the restaurant has a fascinating atmosphere, and promises to attract attention as well as delighting the palate. The building is surrounded by the prosecco grape vineyards of Treviso, and was designed as a meticulous restoration of the existing structure, resulting in a fine balance of volumes and transparency. The entire project, designed by the MAO Architects studio and architect Erich Milanese, uses materials which fully respect the characteristics of the site: concrete, steel, glass, Possagno clay and local stone come together in a harmonious collective to create a space whose refined details elegantly enhance both interiors and exteriors.

Lighting for both the outdoor spaces and the former ice house features the SPY series, the latest collection from Francesconi Architectural Light, seen here in all its many variations and installed with technical support on site by CF Studio.

The project was divided into two settings: for the exterior walkways, Spy spotlights with bespoke uprights were used, while the interior features floodlights chosen from the wide range available. The lights can be directed at any angle on a vertical and horizontal axis, and are therefore able to meet all the lighting needs requested during the planning phase, with results that are respectful of the architectural context.

For the "ice room" at the historical heart of the building, the Spy series was configured using special magnetic attachments and miniature posts, which allowed lights to be installed below and beside a completely glazed floating floor, creating a unique effect: a kind of illuminated surface whose lightness contrasts with the substance of its setting.

All lighting fixtures installed both indoors and out are fitted with new-generation COB LEDs with high colour rendering index, adjustable using TRIAC dimmer systems.
